Week 13 - Final Submission

CLIENTS : Carlos Slim + Zhang Yin

DESIGN BRIEF : two office spaces + one meeting space + elevators

APPROACH :
+ the attitude towards Carlos Slim's office was a focus on the desire, and need for a sense of security as a result of his power and influence
which created a barrier between him and the world outside, an isolation, a disconnection from everything around him.
+ the attitude towards Zhang Yin's office was a contrast to Carlos, it was about being open, constant motion, flowing elements, which all made up this network in which she was connected to the world.
+ the approach towards the meeting space was about a conversation
between the two clients, in which both spoke, and both listened.
none was more dominant than the other.

1.
A table that stands alone within a great space, drawing attention to itself.
A table of power.

Planar elements form barriers, which capsulate space forming pockets of voids, which become buffers, barriers. Further enhancing the sense of seperation from the outside.
A sense of security.

An opening which allows sunlight to fall softly upon the hard and heavy stone slabs.

Light is minimal, seeping in through gaps and slits, revealing the layers of skin which surround the space, protecting it from the outside.

A glimpse of things to come.
Being able to oversee his surroundings through gaps and openings, maintains the sense of security whilst still being disconnected form the outside.

2.
The 2nd office hangs onto the 1st office, while the meeting space hangs onto the 2nd office.
The meeting space becomes a conversation between the 2 clients.
A common language.

Duality amongst uniformity.
Despite both Carlos Slim & Zhang Yin being contrasting characters, there are similarities in terms of their determination to succeed.

A meeting of different elements indicates activity.
(Transparent platforms are for waiting, step on them)

Words reflect her conversation with the outside, a sense of connectivity with everything around her.

3.
A sense of lightness that flows throughout each architectural element, the texture, the form, encloses a space which is part in, and part out.
Power in a physical sense, heavy machinery working around her, in which she is directly linked to.

The position of her office reflects her humble character, of not putting herself at a higher hierarchy, higer position than those around. Her elevator glides slowly and gently down.

Continuity.

Tips :

When importing custom textures, be sure to scan the black and white sketches as colour images, if scanned using Greyscale settings, the image will not work even thought it can be saved as a Targa file, custom textures won't be imprted into Unreal Editor.
